- Admit that writing is your passion and get writing
- Don't make unrealistic goals when you first start. Just write.
- Plot. It doesn't have to be uber detailed or set in stone, but it will help you keep your focus.
- Don't be afraid to change your plot when it's not working.
- Revise. No matter how great you think it is, it can always be better.
- Read to keep the brain functioning and inspiration flowing, if only to be able to say "I can write better quality shit than this!"
- Do research. Whether it's into the plausibility of space travel or into how passive adverbs effect the impact of your text there is always something you to need to find out.
- Don't be afraid to take a break for a week or two and go back fresh when you're having problems.
- Join a writing group, even if it is not for feedback. Keeping involved with other writers keeps you sane, inspired and gives you a reality check on the "biz" and the "craft" .
- Seek feedback. Find some people (preferably writers/editors) whose opinions you trust and who are willing to give you a constructive critique.
- Let go of your ego when receiving feedback. You don't have to agree with all the points, but learn from what people tell you, especially if more than one person gives you the same feedback.
- Don't let a negative critique impact you personally, leave the ego behind and get revising.
These are not "rule" as such, just the little mantra a tell myself regularly to keep me pushing forward instead of stepping backward.
